Commander's News Letter

Hello again to all Post 156 members, families, and friends.

Much has happened since last speaking to you through our NewsLetter.  On March 19th, we had a tremendously successful Breakfast.   Although we purchased an initial amount of food and members brought prepared food from home, three additional trips to the grocery store were necessary.  The only down side, to our Breakfast, was that we were only able to borrow one cooking griddle instead of the normal two.  This caused delays in serving prepared food to our Guest in a timely manner.  This problem has been resolved.  We purchased two new griddles for our post.

Raffle - Our $10,000 Raffle, held in May, was again a paramount success thanks to Moose and his army of ticket sellers.  I was told by several members that this was the largest number of people to attend this yearly event (over 200).  In past years, you could get a second helping of food but not so this year.

Memorial Day - Our Memorial Day Ceremony made front page news in the Orange Review.  It was about 30 minutes in length and consisted of the Orange County High School JROTC Color Guard, the Orange Community Band playing patriotic pieces, Post 156 members reading names of Orange County servicemen killed during past wars and Boy Scouts Troop 14 helping with setup and teardown.

Election of Post Officers for 2011-12 – The nominating committee recommended and forwarded last year’s slate of officers requesting that they serve for another term.  All current officers agreed and the membership voted them in.  Thanks for the show of confidence in us. We hope the coming year is as successful as the last.

American Legion Baseball – Post 156 is fielding two teams this summer:  A junior team (17 and 18 years of age) and a senior team (19 years and older).  The head coach for both teams is Brian Rasnick.  Brian is also the head baseball coach for Orange County High School.  All game schedules are  posted on our website at vaalpost156.com Please, come out and support our boys.

Alzheimer’s Seminar –There will be a free Alzheimer’s seminar identifying critical warning signs of the disease followed by a question and answer session. The 45 minute seminar will be held on Thursday, 28 July @ 7pm at the American Legion, Post 156 in Orange, VA.  This seminar is being presented by Jane Dalton of the Rappahannock/Rapidan Community Services and sponsored by our Post.
